Tipping in Ghana - A Complete Guide

When you travel to another country, it's always a bit of a learning curve to understand the customs. Tipping is one of those typical things that can often be tricky when you've just arrived. To make your trip to Ghana as enjoyable as possible, we'd like to provide you with some information on how tipping works here. Is it customary to tip in Ghana? Where should you tip or not? How much should these tips be? In this article, we'll provide you with all the answers.

Restaurants and bars

It is common to leave a tip in restaurants in Ghana. While tipping is not mandatory, it is customary to leave a tip of 5% to 10% if you are satisfied with the service. When you’re just having a drink at a bar, you can give a small tip by rounding up the amount.

Hotels

A tip for hotel staff is customary in Ghana. When staying at a hotel where someone brings your suitcase(s) to the room, you can give a small tip of between $0.15 and $0.50 per suitcase or backpack. You can also leave a small daily tip of between $0.50 and $1.00 for the housekeeping staff.

Street food

Tipping when buying food on the street isn't customary in Ghana. However, rounding up the bill is acceptable. Given the inexpensive nature of street food in Ghana, rounding up results in small amounts.

Taxis and tuk-tuks

Before getting into a taxi or tuk-tuk, it’s best to agree on a fixed price. It’s not customary to give a tip after the ride.

Tours

When you go on a hike, safari, or other organized tour with a guide, it is customary to give a tip of 5% to 10%. If there are multiple people involved in the tour, a tip jar is often used, and the tip is then shared among the staff members.

Tipping in Ghana conclusion

In Ghana, tipping is common in restaurants and the tourism sector. In other places, it is less common, and giving a small amount to hotel staff or rounding up the amount is often considered a nice gesture.
