How to get to Isla Holbox?

Isla Holbox is an island, so you’ll need to take a ferry from the town of Chiquilá to get there. Ferries depart regularly from Chiquilá, and you don’t need to book a ticket in advance. The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes. Once on the island, you can reach your accommodation on foot or by golf cart.

From Valladolid, Tulum, and Cancún, it’s easy to take a bus to Chiquilá and then catch the ferry to Isla Holbox.

If you’re traveling by rental car, you can’t bring it onto the island. Instead, you can park your car at a lot near the Chiquilá harbor, which costs about $5 per day.

In the center, you'll find several bike rental shops, where you can easily rent a bike.

2. Relax on a secluded beach

In the center of Isla Holbox, it's quite touristy, and the largest and most popular beach is located near the center. When you bike out of the center, you'll encounter fewer people. For example, you can bike towards this area, park your bike by the road, and walk a bit towards the sea, passing through the bushes, where you'll find more secluded parts of the beach. The beach at Playa Punta Cocos is also much quieter compared to the one near the center.

3. Walk along the beautiful sandbar to Punta Mosquito!

Punta Mosquito is a special spot on the island. In addition to the stunning views, you can also spot flamingos if you're lucky. The route to this point is also spectacular, as you walk along white sandbars in a shallow layer of clear turquoise water.

It takes about an hour to reach this point. At the end, there is a sign and fence indicating that you cannot go further. You may need to walk through a shallow layer of water on the way. At Punta Mosquito, you can also relax on the beach when the tide is out. Be sure to bring enough food, drinks, and sunscreen!

Don’t worry, though; the whale shark only feeds on plankton and small fish. The best season to spot the whale shark is between June and September, as they gather in the area to feed on plankton.
